According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, pet owners should monitor their pets for symptoms, B. severe muscle cramps, pain, disorientation or partial paralysis, which are often associated with dangerous spider bites. Five different widows live in the United States, including three different black widow species, a brown widow species, and the red widow, according to Live Science. The three black widow species are the most medically important; although there are minor differences between the three species, they are all inky black spiders with bright red belly markings that sometimes resemble an hourglass.
Bug Guide reports that black widows are common in piles of wood and outdoor buildings, and under logs, stones, or rubble, be careful about letting your dog roam in dusty or cobweb-like areas like these. Research at the University of California Riverside concludes that the United States is home to six to ten different species of hermit, all of which belong to the genus Loxosceles. Brown recluse spiders are most common in the Midwestern states, as far north as southern Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Ohio, but they also inhabit the southern states, from Florida to California.Brown recluse bites can be itchy and painful, but symptoms should go away after four days. True to their name, brown recluses are mysterious, non-aggressive spiders that often live in basements, tunnels, and piles of wood. Laypeople regularly identify small, brown spiders as brown recluse based on observation of a violin-shaped mark on their back. To accurately identify a brown recluse, the Merck Veterinary Manual points out that the spider has unmarked legs with no hair or spines, an unmarked belly, and - most importantly - six eyes arranged in three pairs.

First Spider Bite Symptoms
The symptoms caused by spider bites vary greatly from bite to bite, and individual animals react differently to their poisons. Pet Education describes The first symptoms in dogs and cats are often redness, inflammation, swelling, hair loss or discoloration at the bite site - But often bites go unnoticed until systemic symptoms appear. Some of these systemic symptoms are anxiety, muscle weakness, partial paralysis, disorientation, and seizures. Dogs and cats often experience muscle spasms after being poisoned by black widows. Cats are particularly susceptible to Black Widow venom, and they often begin to drool and show paralysis after a bite. Veterinarians treat minor spider bites largely symptomatically and provide them with pain relievers and supportive care. Typical treatment is for the veterinarian to collect blood samples and monitor your pet's progress. Serious poisoning, however, may require medication to stop muscle contractions, counteract the necrotizing effects of the poison, or lower blood pressure. The University of California Davis notes that antivenin for black widow bites exists, but it is rarely used in the treatment of bitten pets, largely due to its short shelf life, high cost, and the relative rarity of bites. If you suspect your pet has been bitten by a poisonous spider, see a veterinarian immediately. Hollywood arachnids notwithstanding, spiders are receding creatures and are not prone to biting pets or humans. Most bites result from accidental contact, e.g. B. when a dog or a cat lies down on the spider, which - fearful for its life - bites in defense. We recommend that you keep your pet from spending time in places where spiders can lurk, such as around the corner.
