It's raining cats and dogs outside, you've sprained your ankle or you're sick in bed. How handy would it be if someone got you Home delivery of groceries and household products would. Various supermarkets and websites promise you just that and offer inexpensive and fresh deliveries directly to your door. In our test, we find out whether the online markets are actually an alternative to the supermarket around the corner.

How do we test grocery delivery services?

When selecting our providers, we made sure that they are not only available in large cities such as Hamburg, Berlin and Munich. Some providers even use forwarding companies such as DHL, which bring your ordered products to the most remote places in Germany. In addition, we also evaluate the range, the availability of various product groups, delivery conditions such as minimum order values and shipping.

This is how we test

Our testers get an overview of the market and analyze all possible offers. In addition to market-leading providers, smaller representatives are also taken into account. From this multitude of services, the relevant offers from the editor's point of view are individually tested. Test results are then compared.

This is often associated with high delivery costs. But do these cease to exist above a certain amount and does the delivery of heavy crates cost additional money? As with all comparisons, our test scheme is practical; we try to test the grocery delivery services in the same way as you would use them in private. For this we also compared the prices with the costs in the store.

The best grocery delivery service: Rewe

Rewe
Costs and means of payment

Purchased comfortably

Rewe is available throughout Germany and the online service is also available in many places. The user guidance is convincing, as is the selection and the payment options. Even if the handling of substitute products is not always consistent, Rewe offers a really good grocery delivery service.

In our opinion, the Rewe supermarket with its in-house delivery service has the edge in comparison. Here you have all the options, because the market not only supplies canned soups, but also frozen goods and items with age restrictions such as tobacco products and high-proof alcohol. Payment methods, availability and delivery conditions are all positive. We also liked the many notifications that the service sends you via SMS or email on request. Only the somewhat arbitrary substitute products, since oatmeal were not available when an order was placed, the service delivered crispbread instead, and we did not like the rarely available delivery on the same day in the test.

A provider without any "offline branches" takes second place with us: myTime.de. The online delivery service accepts many payment methods and even lets you choose between the delivery services you want. You should be aware of these, because among other things myTime.de delivers products via DHL. Despite this, you can order chilled groceries and spirits. Unfortunately, you have to forego the delivery of tobacco. In addition, the online service requires a deposit if you order frozen products in the cool box and does not offer the return of beverage crates. These can be sent back to the provider and you will receive a voucher for your next order.

Other good alternatives: All you Need and Amazon Pantry

All You Need and Amazon Pantry also manage without branches. However, both services do not support the delivery of chilled products, as they order via established freight forwarders on the one hand and do not use special cool boxes on the other. At Amazon Pantry you also have to do without spirits and tobacco. In addition, the service is not available to everyone, because you need an active Amazon Prime subscription. However, since both services do not require a minimum order value and also require acceptable shipping costs, smaller orders are also worthwhile here.

We advise against these delivery services

We rate the services Amazon Fresh and Lebensmittel.de not particularly satisfactory. Amazon Fresh offers a wide range of frozen products and combines them with the advantages of Amazon Pantry, but you need a separate subscription to use them. You have to do this in addition to the Amazon Prime subscription and thus there are simply too many costs before you put the first product in the shopping cart.

Lebensmittel.de made a good impression at first glance. However, the service offers very few products and makes buying difficult with a poorly managed site that doesn't even offer images for many products. For example, you only choose between two types of beer and can then buy a maximum of three, otherwise the maximum number will be exceeded. Purchases in advance are not possible and due to the strong alternatives there are hardly any reasons to shop at Lebensmittel.de.

We left out these services

Are you wondering why your favorite grocery service doesn't appear on this list? It is possible that he only delivers his products regionally. One example is Bringmeister, a sub-brand of Edeka. The service is convincing in many ways, but delivers only in Munich, Potsdam and Berlin. For this reason, we have left it out for our Germany-wide comparison.

Likewise the online shops of Lidl, DM and Rossmann. They all allow you to shop conveniently online, but in our opinion they offer a rather one-sided range. In the online shop, Lidl concentrates on objects and not on groceries, and the DM and Rossmann drugstores focus on hygiene and household items. You cannot shop here for a full dinner.

Deposit, shipping and minimum order values: You should definitely pay attention to these things

You are quickly overwhelmed by the wide range of grocery delivery services and you say goodbye to shopping too quickly. You should read the conditions of the orders carefully before you go shopping. Because grocery deliveries are not always worthwhile, as hidden costs or barriers to online purchases drive up prices and make deliveries more difficult.

High minimum order values

If you often order online, you are usually not used to minimum order values. You won't find them on Amazon, Saturn and MediaMarkt. It is therefore surprising that Rewe generally only allows orders from 40 euros and Edeka sets an order limit at 20 euros. The delivery services are therefore more worthwhile for buyers with enough storage space for large orders. If you do not have this, it is best to choose a service with no minimum order value from the table at the top of this page.

Shipping costs that are only waived for expensive orders

Another special feature when buying groceries on the Internet: the late elimination of shipping costs. MyTime.de charges a delivery fee of 4.99 euros for orders up to 80 euros.

Deposit and surcharge for beverage deliveries

If you live in the attic, you have probably already toured the delivery of crates of drinks. The employees often carry them right in front of your apartment door and you save yourself the hassle of carrying them up. However, because beverages are heavy and bulky, grocery delivery services usually require them Surcharges per box. In addition, there is the deposit, which is also added to drinks in the local supermarket.

This is often only added to the shopping cart. An advantage of having the goods delivered: Empty crates of drinks can be given back to the freight forwarder at Rewe and Edeka - provided you have also bought them through the service. However, the reimbursement is often made as a voucher for the respective online shop and cannot be paid out in cash. Do you intend to order from a provider often? taking deposit boxes with you is a real advantage when buying online.

Are grocery delivery services more expensive than branches?

When ordering groceries, you have to include shipping costs up to a certain amount. These are then eliminated and theoretically, having the delivery delivered would have to be just as expensive as shopping in a branch. But is that really the case? To do this, we compared the prices of the online providers with a branch in Hamburg.

Food delivery services price table

In comparison, it is noticeable that only Rewe and MyTime.de offer all of the products tested. However, you also pay the most here in comparison and you have to expect a surcharge of 100 percent for the "Zewa Proven Toilet Paper", for example, if you buy from Rewe. The Hamburg Rewe branch is different. Here we could buy all items and paid the least in comparison. With its very small assortment, Lebensmittel.de did not offer most of the items at all. If you combine the Amazon services Amazon Pantry and Amazon Fresh, you can get almost all items at fair prices. Here, however, you have to include the monthly subscription costs.

Conclusion and practical alternatives

Overall, there are several very good food delivery services available in Germany. This offers assortments that can easily keep up with the local branches and charge little or no additional fees, especially for large orders. The variety of services allows you to choose the right provider to suit your needs. We generally recommend Compare shopping lists from different providers. Thanks to several tabs in the Internet browser and article numbers, this is done quickly.

Taking a deposit with you is a great advantage when having food delivered. We have to record shipping costs and high minimum order values as disadvantages. If you have to pay a little attention to money, you may be able to buy a few more products instead of the shipping costs. In this case, we have a few more tips for you that can make shopping a little easier.

These alternatives make shopping easier

Do you want to do a bulk purchase but don't have your own car? Then you can use car sharing to rent a car for a few minutes, a few hours or for a longer period of time. A comparison of different car sharing providers shows that you can find the right service for many situations here.

As an alternative, bike rental companies often also offer cargo bikes or pedelecs that you can rent for little money. You don't have to carry heavy crates of drinks around town. If you prefer to buy your own e-bike, you will always find cargo bikes under the models in the linked offer article.
