A man of letters speaks about literature: Peter von Matt is also a winning speaker: this volume brings together pieces about Johann Peter Hebel, E.T.A. Hoffmann, Elias Canetti and many other poets.

Review note on Neue Z├╝rcher Zeitung, June 24, 2004

What the Germanists do and don't do - who cares these days ?! You were once the "administrators of the nation's intellectual treasure trove", Manfred Koch quotes the author of these "Speeches on Literature", who explains why the loss of this function was logical - on the one hand. On the other hand, Peter von Matt is currently demonstrating how a literary scholar can still move the public today. Namely, by neither lamenting the loss of fixed standards and clear hierarchies, nor succumbing to the new "conceptual magic" of large parts of the cultural sciences. Von Matt advocates a "creative endurance" which confronts the German scholars with the attractive task of demonstrating the art of seduction to the historical "to an increasingly traditional society and using the new freedoms instead of complaining about them. For a view of this high art the reviewer recommends: this book.
