Is there a trinity

Trinity

This glass window in a church shows God the Father with the red cape on the right. On the left is God the Son, i.e. Jesus with the cross. Below the Holy Spirit is depicted as a dove. All three wear a golden halo around their heads.

The Trinity embraces the Christian God as God the Father, God the Son and the Holy Spirit. So, according to the Christian faith, God can appear in three different forms. You can think of it like water: it shows up as liquid water, as ice or as steam. But the material is always the same. The Trinity is also called the "Trinity".

Much is written about God in the Old Testament. This always means God the Father. Jesus was only born around the year zero of our calendar. Many people believed him to be the Son of God. The Holy Spirit is already mentioned when Mary, the mother of Jesus, became pregnant. At baptism and after the death of Jesus, the Holy Spirit appears as a dove.

We can still hear today at baptism that in the Christian faith there is God in three forms. The pastor baptizes the child “In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit”. It is difficult for many Christians to understand this Trinity. Followers of other religions sometimes accuse Christianity of having several gods there.

The Ten Commandments say that one should not make an image of God. Nevertheless there are innumerable images of God the Father. Mostly he is portrayed as an old man with a beard.

What Does the Bible Say About God the Father?

God appears in the first sentence of the Old Testament. It says: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth". It means God the Father. He has different names. One of them is "Yahweh". In Hebrew you just write YHW. You have to think of the vowels. So you can say “Yahweh” or “Jehovah”. A certain group of Christians call themselves Jehovah's Witnesses because they prefer this variant. In other places God is named "Elohim", "Adonai" and a few others.

Except for Adam and Eve in Paradise, no one saw God. They say you would drop dead because it is so sacred. Later, Moses, Abraham, and many prophets heard God's voice. But you never saw him yourself.

Many deeds are said of God: He is said to have led the Israelites out of Egypt and into what is now Israel. He is said to have strengthened the soldiers in many wars and given them victory. There are many other narratives. After all, he is said to have sent his son Jesus into the world so that people could find their way back to him. At the end of the world he should judge people and send them either to heaven or to hell.

What does the Bible say about God the Son?

The "Son of God" is mentioned many times in the New Testament. Christians believe that he is something like the "visible part of God" who came into the world. His name was Jesus. The New Testament describes how he lived, died, and came back to life. This is the view of faith.

Jesus is also mentioned outside the Bible. It is a man like many in those days. What he experienced was nothing out of the ordinary, including his death on the crucifixion. The Romans did this to many people whom they condemned as rebels. This side of Jesus is called the "historical Jesus". It has nothing to do with the Trinity.

What does the Bible say about God as the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is often depicted as a dove, here on a mosaic.

The Holy Spirit is also called “Spirit of God”. It is also mentioned in the Old Testament. Most of the time, however, it occurs in the New Testament:

The Holy Spirit made Mary pregnant. At baptism, the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus as a dove. Before he died, Jesus promised his followers that he would remain with them as the Holy Spirit. Jesus also commanded them to baptize people "in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit." At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came down on the followers of Jesus in the form of tongues of fire.

The Holy Spirit is thus the “form” of God that should always be with people. Jesus, on the other hand, was only with them for a certain time. God the Father was only with Adam and Eve in Paradise, afterwards no one saw him again.
