Amazon is reportedly in talks to acquire Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM) film studios. With the acquisition, the mail order giant Amazon could drastically expand its library in the entertainment market and strengthen its own streaming service "Prime Video". The Information reported.

Only a few details are known about the conversations. The current status of the talks is also unclear. According to "The Information", Amazon wants to pay between 7 and 10 billion US dollars for MGM. The film studio has been looking for a suitable buyer since December 2020.

James Bond only Amazon exclusive?

MGM has a library of major film franchises such as James Bond and also owns the US pay TV network Epix, which is available on cable television. The company also produces popular TV series such as "The Handmaid's Tale", "Fargo" and "Shark Tank". Meanwhile, competitive pressure in the streaming market continues to rise. Competitors like Disney are increasingly relying on offering their own content only via their own platform. After the acquisition, a lot of MGM content could then possibly only be viewed exclusively via Prime Video.

The news of the talks between MGM and Amazon comes just days after Amazon announced that Jeff Blackburn will be returning to the retail giant. Blackburn was previously responsible for Amazon's entertainment activities and would lead a new global media group, according to The Information.
