Can someone sponsor my blog
The Worst Mistake You Can Make As A Beginner Blogger (And How To Avoid It)
I got a nice email the other day from ... let's call him Tim.
Tim wanted to know how to install WordPress plugins. He immediately sent me his link, which somehow blabla.wordpress.com read. Tim also immediately said that he uses the free service from WordPress.com and is therefore very limited.
But Tim has another, much bigger problem!
But first of all we have to clarify ...
Who is this article suitable for anyway?
The article is intended for those who just want to get into the topic of blogging or erroneously run a blog on blogging platforms such as WordPress.com, Blogger or Tumblr.
And since WordPress is so widespread, we'll both just focus on that.
If you already know how to get one right blog then you should scroll down a little and check out the area with the digital sharecroppers! 😉
OK, let's just get started ...
What is WordPress anyway?
WordPress is your optimal system for creating and managing blogs and websites. With this stylish system you can edit your website from anywhere in the world - all you need is an internet browser and of course an internet connection.
There are also many free and paid themes (designs) and plugins (extensions). WordPress is simply a dream for every website operator.
But why is WordPress so horny? Very easily:
- biggest blogging tool all over the world
- completely free
- helpful and hardworking support
- free and paid themes
- free and paid plugins
- easy installation
What is the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org?
I also find the organizational structure a little confusing. There's kind of WordPress.com and WordPress.org.
But what is what now?
At WordPress.com you can easily create a blog within a few minutes. Unfortunately, there are only pre-selected themes and plugins, so you cannot install your "own" ones. With the free version you also have a domain that somehow name.wordpress.com reads.
If you run a blog like that, then I strongly recommend reading on!
At WordPress.org, on the other hand, you can download the technical system directly. But for the thing to work you have to install it on a web server. But don't worry, more on that later;).
Here you have full control, you can install, change and delete themes and plugins, you can edit the databases and PHP files and, for example, display advertisements on your website.
In short: you can just do anything with it.
Are the blogging platforms completely unusable?
Please do not get me wrong. I have nothing against the blogging platforms mentioned above.
If you want to tell the world what was happening for lunch today or if you visited your grandma for the last time, then these platforms are of course sufficient.
But if you have your blog as a serious means of communication in your marketing used then you should absolutely use the self-installed solution!
But why is WordPress.com so bad?
Whenever I see blogs that are seriously targeted and use the free WordPress.com service, I always wince.
Your blog is your greatest online asset, it is the basis of all your content marketing activities. You put so much time, work and creativity into creating your content, so just watchthat the property belongs to you too - and no one else.
Regardless of whether it is Facebook, eBay, Google or WordPress.com, you always have to assume that one of the services mentioned can simply break away. You have to be sure that you are not completely dependent on it and that your business can continue without it.
If not, it would be catastrophic or?
OK. But what does this have to do with digital share cropping?
What is digital share cropping anyway?
When you talk about digital share cropping or digital lease in kind, that's exactly what you mean - you're building your business on land that doesn't even belong to you.
And if you do that, it can lead to serious problems and cause many people (like me, for example) to shake their heads :).
Nicholas Carr coined the term back in 2006, he said:
One of the fundamental economic characteristics of Web 2.0 is the distribution of production in the hands of the many and the concentration of economic opportunities in the hands of the few.
The whole subject traces back to a model of agricultural production that emerged after the American Civil War.
In this model, the landowner allowed the lessee or the sharecopper (the one who quasi rents the land) to cultivate a piece of land and, on the other hand, to receive a share of the harvest.
So he got all in kind, no money.
The problem with the whole story was that the sharecoppers (tenants) produced, produced and produced and the landowner took a large part of the harvest from them.
He could simply arbitrarily increase the share of the taxes or drive the sharecopper out of his country entirely.
The compatriot thus had the power - almost overnight - to completely destroy the business model and to drive the sharecoppers into ruin.
But what does all of agriculture have to do with your blog?
Anyone can register a blog on WordPress.com and write blog articles on it.
But still, the content effectively belongs - just like with the Sharecopper model - WordPress.com. So the more content (articles, videos, images, etc.) you create, the more valuable WordPress.com's service becomes.
So you do all the work and the service provider benefits from it.
What's so bad about landowners?
Landowners are moody
There is a small trend that more and more small business owners are switching completely to services such as Facebook. It's quick to set up, it might feel a little trendy, it's easy to manage, and most of all, it's all free.
But watch out! What if you break the guidelines and delete your account? Yeah, then all of your articles are gone, all that hard work, just for nothing.
Or what if they make any changes that mean a total change for you or that are completely against your views and harm your business?
Services change very quickly. Isn't that the reason why the risk is far too great?
If you hosted your blog on WordPress.com then you are - sorry to have to tell you - a digital sharescopper.
You hope every day that you will continue to please the compatriot and that he will continue to support you.
But the thing is, the landowner has no idea who you are and doesn't really care about you either.
Landlords come, landlords go
The second important reason is that landowners (or even internet services) come and go. They may still be there today, but who guarantees that they will still be there tomorrow?
MySpace is a good example here. This social network used to be all the rage and everyone romped around there. And now? What about today?
Nobody is interested in MySpace these days. Well, maybe soon. The planned relaunch already looks chic.
Maybe blogging platforms like WordPress.com, Blogger or Tumblr will last for years or decades.
But what if not?
And what is the big secret now?
The big secret is simply that you should put most of your time and creativity into the online wealth that you control and that is yours.
Of course, any site can be hacked, for example, but then you are in control and can easily fix the problem.
With a self-installed WordPress blog, you can determine your individual design, install the plugins of your choice and make the system as secure as you would like it to be.
Ahh, what should I do about it now?
First of all, keep calm - there is strength in calm :).
There's a little to-do list here, just follow it up ...
- Choose a domain
Pick a domain that you and especially your target audience like. I would not use a keyword domain, but one that is easy to remember and has more of a real brand name with recognition value. Keyword domains are just hard to remember and not catchy at all. I always use United Domains to test the domains, it's quick and easy.
- Register your domain and web space
Register for example at Hostgator, domainFACTORY, All-Inkl.com or at domain * go. At domain * go, the Relax L + tariff doesn't seem to be bad and it is also the subsidiary of domainFACTORY. And I am a satisfied customer there :).
- Install WordPress
My good friend Alex Bellon has published a nice little video tutorial for this, just take a look! 😉
(I should finally deal with the subject of video ...)
- Choose a WordPress theme
Now you can choose a design according to your wishes. Be sure to take a look at my small selection of WordPress themes - there is sure to be a suitable provider for you!
- Install WordPress plugins
And again there's a great article from me (höhö) that lists the best WordPress plugins. Click here to read the article.
- Create your basic structure
Now you only have to create the basic structure such as the categories, pages and tags and transfer the old articles.
Don't waste your valuable time, strength, creativity, and perseverance on someone else. Don't put everything on one card and don't lease someone else's “land”.
My advice to you is: NEVER BLOG ON WORDPRESS.COM!
Now it is your turn. Do you want to be a digital sharescopper or you? your own Create wealth online?
