How much intelligence are foresight skills

6 theses on artificial intelligence

4. AI forces an upgrade of human intelligence and empathy

While AI provides us with improved forecasts, it also challenges us to improve our future criteria. The social media crisis shows that it is not enough to develop optimizing algorithms. Increasing the efficiency of human communication leads to enormous consequential damage. Human communication depends on trust, reciprocity and slowness. Tyranny and emotional suffering are the result when communication is structured exclusively in the categories of increased stimulus and reaction.

Artificial intelligence can only be truly “intelligent” if it is shaped by human goals and meanings. What is to be produced, which forms of mobility and communication make sense for the future, always depend on the context of human experience. Health and illness are subject to subjective experience, healing is always also a social process. These goals are beyond machine logic. They are productions of human culture, expressions of empathy and awareness. AI challenges us to redefine our values and understand what experience, meaning and knowledge really mean.

5. AI is a job shifter, not a job killer

Artificial intelligence will help us eliminate the need for human activities that are repetitive and monotonous. In doing so, it is continuing a process that began with industrial society. It will not be linear or quantitative, in the sense of “taking jobs away”. But as a constant shift from uncreative to more creative, from isolated to more communicative activities. This creates stress in society. But also a liberation from possibilities that were previously hidden under routines.

Many professions involve explicit or implicit human factors, even if they involve strong routines. Nurses don't just “look after” the sick, they are related to them. Bartenders don't just shake cocktails, they practice soul communication. Journalists don't produce information, they create humane interpretations. AI systems can pool knowledge and thus create space for human empathy. AI is shifting the spectrum of professions towards greater complexity.

Traditional professions that run the risk of being “Taylorized” can find their way back to their origins: Doctors can heal again instead of dismissing them. Journalists read again instead of generating floods of information. Caregivers return to empathy instead of managing patients. Craftsmen are again designing with their hands instead of assembling. Traders are trading again instead of calculating. At the same time, the principle of differentiation creates countless new fields of activity: mediators and moderators, connectors and curators, coaches and companions, traffic managers and health providers, mindfulness agents and beauty designers. The number of these professions will exceed the number of activities in industrial society and allow human creativity to be unleashed.

All of these processes require the clever use of AI as well as healthy human self-confidence. Sooner or later it will mean that we can emancipate ourselves from the yoke of industrial wage labor with its many functional constraints.

6. AI re-poses the question of freedom

People tend to transfer their personal responsibility to higher authorities. We tend to be manipulated if it makes life more comfortable. This is the real, subliminal fascination of fear with AI: It reflects our unconscious need to be part of a machine ourselves.

In fact, AI offers a reinforcement possibility for all kinds of domination strategies. Political control and media tyranny are given new, powerful tools. But what can be used in the sense of control is also suitable for rebellion. Freedom - as the ability to add one's own to the world - is also enhanced by AI. In the tension between the digital and the human, the human mind and human abilities develop further and reach new evolutionary levels. New power relations arise, new conflicts. But also a new self-confidence. We have nothing to lose but our inner machine being. We have a new, humane world to win.
