The MVV semester ticket consists of a compulsory solidarity fee for all students, which includes a time-limited travel authorization in the entire MVV area, i.e. zones M - 6, with the student ID and a time card, the IsarCard Semester, which provides unlimited travel authorization in the entire MVV area, i.e. zones M - 6, and can be optionally purchased by the students via vending machines and sales outlets in the MVV.

Note on the validation and validity of student IDs as MVV travel authorization in the summer semester 2021:

Due to the restrictions at colleges / universities in connection with the coronavirus and the resulting possible restrictions on the validation of student IDs, the following rules apply to the use of MVV transport with student IDs in the summer semester 2021:

  • The student IDs in the form of plastic cards that are valid for each semester at individual colleges / universities with validation / validity for the winter semester 2020/21 are also valid in the summer semester 2021 as MVV travel authorization during off-peak hours (Mon-Fri 6 p.m. - 6 a.m. and weekends all day).
  • In the summer semester 2021, at least one student ID validated / valid for the winter semester 2020/21, e.g. with the abbreviation WiSe 20/21, is required for trips on the MVV during off-peak times and to purchase the IsarCard Semester.
  • For all student ID cards that have not been validated for either the winter semester 2020/21 or the summer semester 2021, the students must contact their college / university and carry out a validation. These passes do not entitle you to travel on the MVV.
  • For students at universities with student ID cards in paper form, only ID cards for the summer semester 2021 are valid for trips in the MVV and for the purchase of the IsarCard Semester, as the students at these universities received or were able to collect valid ID cards for the summer semester 2021.
  • As before, you must carry an official photo ID with you when driving. A valid student / semester ID and an official photo ID are used together as a ticket for trips during off-peak hours.
  • As before, the IsarCard Semester can be purchased from the machines and sales points in the MVV and entitles you to travel around the clock on the MVV.
  • As before, the certificate of enrollment will not be recognized as a travel authorization in the MVV - please note this rule when you travel in the MVV.

Students with a severely handicapped ID card - what needs to be done?

Students who are in possession of an ID card for free transport in public transport (with an attached sheet and token from the Office for Family and Social Affairs) can be exempted from paying the solidarity fee upon application.
The application must be sent to the university at which you are enrolled or re-registered before the due date (i.e. before the end of the re-registration period). You can find more detailed information on this on the website of your university or contact the contact person at your university personally.

Can I take someone with me?

No, the student ID is a personal MVV travel authorization and the IsarCard Semester is a personal MVV ticket. Both do not include entrainment by other adults or children.

I live outside the MVV area. What do I need to pay attention for?

The MVV semester ticket is only valid for journeys with the means of transport approved in the entire network area in 2nd class (S-Bahn, U-Bahn, tram, bus and approved regional trains). When traveling from outside the MVV area, a train ticket (e.g. monthly ticket) must also be purchased.

When using the MVV semester ticket as an MVV network ticket on regional trains (SPNV) together with a rail ticket, this is a so-called inbound and outbreak of traffic and the following rule applies:

  • When traveling on regional trains from the network area to stations outside the network area (outbreak of traffic), network tickets are valid up to the last stop of the train that is in the area of validity of the network ticket.
  • For journeys with regional trains from stations outside the network area to destinations in the network area (breaking in traffic), network tickets are valid from the first stop of the train that is in the area of validity of the network ticket.
  • Example: Lives in Rosenheim and studies at TUM. The local trains used by the student stop both on the way to Munich and on the way back in Aßling. The MVV semester ticket can be used to / from Aßling and a Rosenheim-Aßling train ticket is also required.
If at least one of the local trains used does not stop in Aßling, but only in Munich East, the MVV semester ticket can only be used to / from Munich East and a Rosenheim-Munich East train ticket is required.
Can visiting students at the affiliated universities use the semester ticket?

Visiting students are not members of the university and therefore do not and cannot pay a solidarity fee do not use the semester ticket. The fee paid is a maximum amount and only entitles to attend individual events. A matriculation number that may be issued is necessary at individual universities for procedural reasons and does not entitle you to purchase the IsarCard Semester. For further information, please contact the relevant university.

What happens if I am de-registered during the semester?

If you are de-registered retrospectively at the beginning of the semester, your student status will expire and you will have to return your student ID to the university.
However, an IsarCard Semester that has already been purchased cannot be returned or exchanged during the semester; it is no longer valid without the student ID.
Before buying an IsarCard Semester, please make sure that you will be enrolled for the entire semester. If it is possible for you to de-register during the semester, we recommend that you consider purchasing time cards in the training tariff etc. in order to avoid financial disadvantages after de-registration.
